Unique facade artwork for the new apartment building Ravelijn in Diemen

19 February 2024

The new facade sculpture of the under-construction apartment building Ravelijn in Diemen is a true eyecatcher. The artwork is an abstract representation of the oldest map of North Holland from 1575 and refers to the historical context of this location. It is created to accentuate this new ‘entrance’ to the center of Diemen. The building’s location is made visible in the map by means of a striking ‘red stone’. During an official moment, Councilor Marian Everhardt of the municipality of Diemen and Hans Lachmansingh of a.s.r. Real Estate placed the red stone in the brickwork artwork.

Connection between residential environment and the past

In the brickwork artwork, an abstract representation of one of the oldest maps of North Holland from 1575 is incorporated. The section depicting the location of the building is displayed on the facade. This includes the Diemerbrug at the intersection of the towpath between the Diemermeer and the Bijlmermeer, and the Diemerlaan. The facade artwork is accompanied by a written explanation for residents and visitors.

Ravelijn

The residential building Ravelijn is a development by area developer AM. The 51 homes have been purchased by a.s.r. real estate on behalf of the ASR Dutch Core Residential Fund. More than half of the homes will be rented out in the mid-market rental segment, thus meeting the significant demand for affordable rental housing in the Amsterdam region. The building is designed by INBO and will be constructed by Bot Bouw. Expected completion is in the fourth quarter of this year.

Friends-apartments

The homes in the project consist of two, three, and four-room apartments, ranging from 50 m² to 89 m². Included are ten so-called 'Friends apartments' based on a living concept by AM. These are apartments for individuals who are not in a relationship but wish to live together and independently in the city. These homes feature two spacious bedrooms, each with its own adjoining bathroom. The living room, kitchen, and toilet are shared in these apartments. All homes have an outdoor space, and the surrounding area offers many amenities such as shops and restaurants. Additionally, just a few minutes' bike ride away are the Diemerplein shopping center and the largest sports park in Amsterdam, featuring facilities such as an athletics track, football and tennis courts, and an ice rink.
