At Karakter, lifelong living is central. All residents, whether they come by car, bicycle, wheelchair or on foot, experience optimum accessibility. From the car park, the use of lifts is easy, and cyclists can safely park their bicycles in two easily accessible storage areas on the raised ground floor. The deliberate choice to make the bicycle racks accessible via the inner garden encourages meetings with neighbours and creates a lively atmosphere.
Strollers use the central access via the monument and the courtyard garden, which also ensures spontaneous encounters on the way to the flats. The flats are accessible without thresholds and allow all residents, regardless of their mobility, to enjoy their living environment without hindrance. All flats are designed to receive care (later).
In designing Karakter, great attention was paid to the safety and security of residents. The courtyard garden is publicly accessible, but its private character makes it feel safe and familiar. Thanks to the location of the homes along the living galleries, there is sufficient social control and a view of the courtyard garden. Clear sightlines, the raised ground level and the central location of the entrances via the monument and the courtyard garden all contribute to a safe living environment.
The public character of both the monument and the courtyard garden ensures that residents of the surrounding Palenstein neighbourhood also become involved in Karakter's community. They can participate in activities or rent spaces for their own hobby clubs and gatherings. This creates a dynamic environment where residents and neighbours come together for weekly activities or just for a pleasant chat in the courtyard garden.
