OnzeAuto and AM promote healthy and car-free living in Hero van Breda

11 November 2025

In the new Hero neighborhood of Breda, AM and OnzeAuto will collaborate to create a healthy, sustainable, and car-free living environment. The collaboration is part of a broader vision to encourage residents to live healthier and more consciously, with less car ownership and more space for exercise, socializing, and greenery. The collaboration contributes to the ambition to create the healthiest neighborhood in Breda.

Sharing electricity instead of owning it

The collaboration will start with two electric shared cars for the first residents. As the neighborhood grows, this will be scaled up to a maximum of eight shared cars for a total of 422 households. The cars will be available to all residents of Hero van Breda.

The city as a living space

Hero van Breda was designed based on the principle of ‘healthy living in the city’. This means a fruit-picking route, green indoor spaces, and a vegetable garden for the entire neighborhood. This creates plenty of space for people to meet. The neighborhood was deliberately designed to discourage car ownership. Private parking spaces are limited and public parking is not possible without a permit. Parcel delivery is also cleverly organized: via central parcel boxes in the communal living room (Club Hero), which significantly reduces the number of courier deliveries in the street.

“At Hero van Breda, we literally get residents moving,” says Michael Haverkamp of AM. “The way we design our city determines how we live together. Hero is all about a close-knit community: residents organize facilities such as shared mobility together. By making cars less dominant, there is room for socializing, relaxation, and real contact.”

Built on connection

Sven from OnzeAuto: “What appeals to us in this area is the focus on people, rather than just bricks and mortar. Hero van Breda is built on connection. Our form of shared mobility fits in perfectly with that. Fewer cars, but more contact—that's what we're working toward together.”
