New neighborhoods in Hoef en Haag: space for people and nature

15 May 2025

Hoef en Haag – Commissioned by Hoef en Haag C.V. (a cooperation of area developers AM and BPD) the official starting signal for the construction of De Groene Weelde and De Vrijbuiters was given yesterday. Alderman Joop van Montfoort of the Vijfheerenlanden municipality performed a symbolic act together with future residents.

The two new neighborhoods offer living space for 53 households with starters, people moving on and seniors in a particularly green setting. Communal gardens and public green spaces blend seamlessly. Encouraging encounters is central to the design of the area.

Hedgehog highway

The basis of the landscaping, to a design by consulting firm Haver Droeze, is aimed at strengthening natural values and a healthy living environment. For example, the gardens are accessible to hedgehogs. There are openings in the fences and hedges so that they can move freely via a so-called hedgehog highway. The houses are built by Reinbouw BV in such a way that various birds and bats also have an opportunity to build a nest.

Alderman Joop van Montfoort: “This part of De Erven will be a beautiful green place. Sustainable living around an old orchard, that sounds wonderful, doesn't it? De Groene Weelde and De Vrijbuiters: the names alone give a sense of freedom and the good life. I hope that this will actually become a reality for the new residents and that they will feel part of the village of Hoef en Haag.”

Project Director Jeroen Officier, Hoef en Haag CV: “This will really be a place where it is nice to live. We have created courtyards in this part of De Erven around an old orchard where residents can meet each other. The combination of various housing types, sustainable building methods and the green, rural environment makes this new neighborhood special. We are proud of the cooperation with all parties involved and look forward to the completion of these beautiful homes.”

A diverse housing offer for young and old

De Groene Weelde is located near an existing fruit orchard on the edge of the village, close to the Lek River. Here there will be five detached houses, ten semi-detached houses and eight spacious back-to-back houses. The adjacent neighborhood, De Vrijbuiters, has fourteen back-to-back homes and sixteen row houses, including eight lifetime homes and eight single-family homes.

Timber Construction

The designs of the houses were created by MIX architecture and are inspired by the rural and village characteristics of the area. Extra special are the veranda houses built entirely in wood. This sustainable construction method contributes to lower CO₂ emissions and provides a healthy indoor climate for the residents.

About De Erven

De Erven is one of three neighborhoods within the new village of Hoef en Haag and is closest to the Lek River. The neighborhood has its own residential atmosphere, is spacious and characterized by a rural and playful character. There are several orchards, small paths and many green areas with various places for recreation and meeting. The Lek is within walking distance as are the various facilities in the village center. Parking is mostly on private property or in small parking lots. This keeps the streets and courtyards car-free and gives children plenty of room to play safely outside.
